Celebrating the NYWBA Community

As I finalize this column, we are about to kick off our 80th Anniversary with our sold-out Installation and Award Dinner on September 30. At this event, we install our incoming Officers and Directors, as well as our NYWBA Delegates to the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York Board.

We are also presenting the Hon. Florence E. Allen Award to Roberta A. Kaplan, whose zealous advocacy for marriage equality before the U.S. Supreme Court in Windsor has helped secure equal rights for same-sex married couples in dozens of states. Our next Newsletter will feature highlights and photos from this event. In the meantime, I want everyone to know how honored and excited I am to officially be installed as NYWBA President!

Our other major event in September was our annual Membership Reception on September 18 at the offices of Skadden, Arps in Times Square. We had the pleasure of welcoming new, returning and prospective members, and enjoying wine and refreshments while people mingled, networked, and learned more about the Association. The program included remarks by Hon. Judith S. Kaye, long-time NYWBA member and former Chief Judge of the State of New York; event Co-Chair Jennifer P. Brown; Membership Co-Chair and Director Michael W. Appelbaum; and myself. We especially thank everyone who brought a children’s book to help support the NYWBA’s Hon. Judith S. Kaye Children’s Book Club. This year’s donations –115 books, plus a cash donation – were sent to SafeHorizon’s Children’s Center in the Family Court. Many thanks to Reception Co-Chairs Magnolia Levy and Jennifer P. Brown, and to everyone who made this event such a success.

On September 20, NYWBA participated in WBASNY’s Board and Committee meetings at Columbia Law School. On September 19, NYWBA was delighted to host members from other Women’s Bar Chapters for an informal dinner at Patsy’s Pizzeria. It was great to strengthen ties with colleagues across the State. The next meeting for WBASNY will be held in Albany in November. If you are interested in getting involved at the state level, please let me know.

I am so proud that NYWBA set an all-time record for membership in 2013-2014. Our 2014-2015 membership drive is underway, and I am sure we can break that record again! If you haven’t done so already, please renew your membership. Please also help us grow our community by recruiting friends in the profession to join. Members can take advantage of our FREE Continuing Legal Education programs, our award-winning Mentoring Circles program, networking events, and a host of other benefits. Everyone who joins NYWBA also automatically becomes a member of WBASNY and can participate in NYWBA and WBASNY Committees. For details and to join or renew, check our website (www.nywba.org).

I am also excited about the many programs we are organizing or co-sponsoring in the near future. These include two programs by the Judges and Lawyers’ Breast Cancer Alert – a) JALBCA’s annual “Symposium,” featuring a panel of doctors, lawyers, and judges who will discuss the “off-label” use of cancer drugs (see p. 2); and b) “Through the Looking Glass,” a program discussing breast cancer screening, treatments, predictions and prognoses, and ways to improve life after a breast cancer diagnosis (see p. 8). Other programs include “Mediation Settlement Day Kick-Off” (discussing OCA’s new mediation initiative in the Commercial Part, p. 1); the next “Civil Court Express Lunch” on “Have You Planned for Your Further Financial & Healthcare Needs?” (p. 3); and “Facebook – Get the Picture” on the discovery and admissibility of Internet evidence (p. 3). In honor of the “National Pro Bono Celebration” during the week of October 20, I want to acknowledge our members who perform an extraordinary number of hours of free and discounted legal work every year. Members often represent not only those who are legally entitled to pro bono services, but also the working poor and others who don’t meet the harsh definitions used to qualify for aid.

I particularly want to celebrate the NYWBA’s Matrimonial Pro Bono Project, which was founded thanks to the vision of long-time member Patricia Fersch and supported thereafter by Ms. Fersch and members Judith White, Hon. Joan Lobis, Hon. Laura E. Drager, Past President Hon. Jacqueline Silbermann, the NYWBA Matrimonial & Family Law Committee, and others. This initiative provides judges with an option to refer indigent litigants in contested matrimonial cases to a Project Manager (funded by the NYWBA Foundation) for assignment of pro bono counsel. The lawyers who volunteer are matrimonial attorneys with a minimum of five years experience who agree in advance to devote up to 25 hours to these cases in New York County. This program is so successful that it has recently been replicated in Kings County.

This is the type of innovative approach and initiative that NYWBA is known for, and I know that as we celebrate our 80th Anniversary with members of this caliber that the best is yet to come!

In her column in April, President Elizabeth Bryson talked about sexual politics and "women's work." She took issue with Harvard President Lawrence Summers' recent remarks implying that women are innately less suited to pursing careers in science or engineering. Such retrograde thinking is self-defeating. Mr. Summers had to apologize, and Harvard is now actively address the status of women in academia. February 2005

In her column in February, President Elizabeth Bryson talked about matters of life and death. She related the experiences of a friend fighting breast cancer and her mother and family addressing the loss of two brothers to AIDS several years ago, and how each circumstance, though very different, teaches us once again the importance of choosing to live life to its fullest every day. January 2005

In her column in January, President Elizabeth Bryson discussed the importance of taking steps to ensure that judges in New York have the appropriate qualifications and integrity to ensure the fair and equal administration of justice. She discusses pending legislation and proposed amendments to the Rules of Judicial Conduct that would have an influence on the method of selecting state court judges and the rules that would apply to candidates for judicial office in New York. Ms. Bryson was honored to chair a WBASNY Task Force to look at the proposed legislation and rule changes, and she discusses the process and proposals. She also describes the recent gala celebration WBASNY's 25 Anniversary and the wonderful presentation of the inaugural "Betty Weinberg Ellerin Mentoring Award" to Justice Ellerin. Finally, she reminds everyone of the importance of ensuring that their membership is renewed by January 31, 2005. December 2004

In her column in December, President Elizabeth Bryson discussed the importance of speaking out and being heard. She demonstrated the value of the Association's screening of candidates for judicial office, particularly now, when the integrity of the judiciary is under attack. Because many of our members practice in solo and small firm settings, Ms. Bryson recommended that members appear before the Commission on Solo and Small Firm Practice, which is holding hearings and looking for comments, concerns and suggestions to make the lives of attorneys in these settings and their clients easier. Members should also plan to join us at several upcoming events that promise to be very exciting, including the NYWBA Foundation's Breakfast Series Speaker Event, a fundraiser scheduled for December 1st, WBASNY's 25th Anniversary Gala on December 2nd that will pay tribute to our own past President, the Honorable Betty Weinberg Ellerin, for her nearly 50 years of mentoring and service to women attorneys and judges throughout New York and across the country, and the New York Women's Agenda's Star Breakfast on December 7th. September 2004

In her column in September, President Elizabeth Bryson asked members to join her in celebrating the Association's 70th Anniversary year (2004-05). Coincidentally, it was also the 25th anniversary year for the Women's Bar Association of the State of New York (WBASNY), which is the umbrella organization for all 16 women's bar associations across New York State. The NYWBA and its past President Joan Ellenbogen were instrumental in the formation of WBASNY, and it is a joy to see that it is flourishing. This is Beth's second term as President, and in her column she discussed the excitement of continuing programs begun last year and new programs that will begin this year. April 2005

In her column for April, President Elizabeth Bryson congratulated several women who make history every day, including the 11 honorees designated for Women's History Month by the National Women's History Project and the New York City Commission on Women. She provided an update on the proposed rules that we have supported to allow asylum for women who are victims of domestic violence or other brutality that is directly or indirectly endorsed by their country's governments. Ms. Bryson also highlighted numerous upcoming events, including the NYWBA Annual Meeting and the Annual Ethics Forum, both in April, and the Women's Bar Convention in New Orleans and the NYWBA Annual Dinner, both in May. March 2004

In her March 2004 column, Ms. Bryson notes that NYWBA's membership has increased by over 33 percent from last year, and nearly 50% from two years ago. She praises the terrific work of NYWBA members, Officers, Board members, Committee Chairs, and others who worked on our membership drive and demonstrate why our bar association is so important, strong and vital. She also salutes two people who may not be lawyers but whose contributions are absolutely invaluable to the Association and the NYWBA Foundation - Executive Director Marta Toro and NYWBA Foundation member Denise Coleman. In her February 2004 column, Ms. Bryson discussed the importance of mentoring and networking, especially for women attorneys.
